VIADUCT 3
North of the depot, Viaduct 3 over Allandale Road and the adjacent bridge over the future K60 road are both complete, as are all other bridges, construction works and railway installations up to Dale Road in Midrand, with only minor finishing works outstanding.
MIDRAND STATION
Construction and building work at Midrand station is finished. Facade glazing, internal finishes and mechanical and electrical works are substantially complete. Installation of the fare gates within the concourse area has commenced. At the platforms, floor tiling is well advanced.
Externally, construction of the carpark, the bus terminus areas and the new section of Grand Central Boulevard (which provides access to the station from the Old Pretoria Road, K101) are all substantially complete. Completion of the attenuation pond, together with paving and landscaping, is in hand.
From Midrand station to Centurion, all construction works and bridge structures, including Viaduct 4 crossing over Rietspruit and Olifantsfontein Road South, are complete. Tracklaying and the installation of associated railway infrastructure in this area are well advanced, progressing to a point immediately south of the John Vorster Viaduct by the end of July 2010.
CENTURION AREA
VIADUCT 5 OVER THE N1 & BEN SCHOEMAN
Viaduct 5 carries the elevated line through Centurion, extending from the balanced cantilever (Viaduct 5b) crossing the N1 highway at John Vorster interchange in the south and the Ben Schoeman highway at the Jean Avenue interchange (Viaduct 5d) in the north.
Construction of Viaduct 5b was completed during July 2010. Catenary masts over this structure are in place. Catenary masts have been erected and placing of sleepers is to start shortly.
Viaduct 5c, almost 3km in length, carrying the line above ground through Centurion, is complete, with tracklaying in progress. It supports the elevated Centurion station platforms located approximately midway along its length, adjacent and parallel to West Street. The concourse buildings and parking area are at ground level. Civil construction at the station is almost finished, with the last of the structural works – the two emergency escape stairs at the southern ends of the platforms – both well advanced. Within the station buildings, internal finishings and M&E works are almost complete.
Externally, construction of the carpark continues, with final layer works, drainage, kerbing and erection of structural steel parking canopies in progress. The bus management building and the perimeter palisade boundary wall are well
advanced.
CENTURION TO PRETORIA
Civil construction works along this section of the route – which includes extensive earthworks, a number of bridges and U-shape structures through the military area – are well advanced. Viaduct 6 crossing Eeufees Road is complete and ready for the installation of trackwork and associated infrastructure. Near Salvokop at the approach to Pretoria, construction of the cut-and-cover structure crossing beneath the Ben Schoeman highway is complete.
PRETORIA STATION
At Pretoria station, civil construction work on the buildings is complete. Internal finishings and electrical and mechanical works are well advanced and the installation of fare gates and associated station equipment will commence shortly. Refurbishment of the historically significant coach shed, which has been incorporated into the Gautrain station design, is substantially complete.
Work continues in the parking and bus areas, with earthworks, drainage activities and final layer works in progress. Construction of the perimeter palisade boundary wall is well advanced.
