PARK STATION
Within the station itself, internal finishes are well advanced. Mechanical and electrical works are in progress, together with the installation of escalators. Erection of structural steelwork for the entrance pavilion on the southern side of Wolmarans Street was substantially complete by the end of July and construction was proceeding with the ventilation structure on the northern side of Smit Street.
At the parkade structure located above the station, the final 6th level deck slab has been cast and erection of precast parapets is in hand. Wolmarans Street, which was deviated during excavations, has been reinstated. Work on Smit Street is nearing completion.
Construction continues on the cut-and-cover section linking the northern end of the station box to the tunnel portal.
PARK STATION TO SANDTON
Within the Phase 2 tunnel section between Johannesburg Park station and Sandton, civil works are approaching completion. The installation of mechanical and electrical equipment is in hand. Tracklaying in the tunnel is progressing southwards from Sandton.
The underground works include the construction of seven emergency access shafts at intervals along the single-track rail tunnel between Park station and Sandton. These shafts will provide access by emergency services personnel to the tunnels below. At the bottom of some shafts, safe havens are being constructed where passengers can detrain and gather in the event of an emergency.
Emergency shaft E1 (Hillbrow):
Construction works at Shaft E1 (80 metres deep) are substantially complete, with external finishings and landscaping to follow.
Emergency shaft E2 (the Wilds, Houghton):
Excavation of the shaft to its final depth of approximately 50 metres is complete, as is the 236 metre adit (cross passage). Construction works continue in the safe haven and technical rooms at the bottom of the shaft. Installation of the structural steelwork access structure within the shaft is complete and construction of the surface head-house building has commenced.
Emergency shaft E3 (Riviera):
The surface head-house structure is complete and external works and landscaping are in progress. Being a shallow shaft with direct access to the surface, no safe haven is necessary at the bottom.
Emergency shaft E4 (Houghton):
Shaft construction is finished and the head-house structure on the surface is substantially complete with only minor
finishing works remaining. External works have commenced and landscaping will follow. Being a shallow shaft, 16m deep, with direct access to the surface, no safe haven is necessary at the bottom
ROSEBANK STATION
Work within the underground areas at Rosebank are in a similar stage of completion to Park station, with internal finishes well advanced and mechanical and electrical installations in progress.
Construction continues on the final of three levels in the parkade structure, which is located – together with the main entrance to the station – on the eastern side of Oxford Road. There are to be two other entrances to the station on the western side, where lateral support piling has been completed and excavations are in hand.
Backfilling of the roof slab over the station box and the adjacent cut-and-cover structures has been completed. The reinstatement of Oxford Road is being carried out on a phased basis, the first section having opened to traffic towards the end of June 2010. Work on the second phase is well advanced.
