From Western Cape Metrorail, newspaper “Blits”:
“Metrorail use the following communication channels to inform commuters in cases of service interruptions.
• Text alerts: Commuters are encouraged to register via e-mail (metrosms@metrorail.co.za) for SMS alerts free of charge. Currently some 20,000 commuters are already recipients of alerts. Metrorail aims to get one in seven commuters registered so they are able to pass information onto their fellow passengers;
• Website updates:
www.capemetrorail.co.za is updated every five minutes during peak times and every 20 minutes during off-peak for those with internet access, particularly employers;
• The Transport Information Centre’s toll-free line -0800 656 463 – which operates non-stop;
• Public announcements are made regularly at stations and employees at stations ensure that customers are informed;
• Traffic updates: Most regional and community radio
stations as well as SABC Morning Live and etv television stations provide vital train updates as part of their traffic reports;
• Free weekly commuter newspaper: Blits publishes planned off-peak maintenance in advance and provides the previous week’s service performance;
• Train timetables: Send an email to northtt@metrorail.co.za, southtt@metrorail.co.za and centraltt@metrorail.co.za to receive instant timetables.
